The Boulder chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic, comprising veterans of the Civil War, was organized on 19 April 1881 as Boulder Post No. 13, Department of the Mountains. In 1882 the western departments were reorganized and this chapter was renamed the Nathaniel Lyon Post No. 5, Department of Colorado and Wyoming. The Boulderado Hotel opened with a New Year's Eve Ball in 1908-1909, and was Boulder's first luxury hotel. This five-story hotel located at 2115 13th Street was the brainchild of three prominent men, Fred Moys, Jonas Bergheim and Walter Nichols, who urged all Boulderites to subscribe to a $100,000 fund drive in 1906.
